Our playroom has become my favorite room in our entire house. This room is actually one of the main reasons we bought this house. When we toured the home and I saw the huge loft space upstairs, I immediately envisioned what a magical space this could be for our children- and getting to put it together was so much fun! It’s a space where we do lots of learning and school, as well as a place for the kids to play, create, be silly, read, relax, and let their imaginations run wild.
Before this room became what it is today, it had to go through quite a face lift. First, it had old, very gross carpet and ugly yellow painted walls when we moved in. We had planned to start painting in Spring 2021 and then we were hit with a big hail storm that damaged our roof and caused water damage in 3 different rooms. But it all worked out because our insurance covered new carpet and new paint for the loft room! So after we had the water damage fixed, replaced part of the wall, replaced the carpet, and repainted- I got to work with a blank canvas!

I knew I wanted this room to be multi-functional, organized, pretty, but also a space that gave my kids a lot of room to play. I also wanted to have some systems in place to keep things organized long term and make cleaning up fairly easy. I spent hours on Pinterest and Instagram looking at other play spaces and gathering inspiration… and here’s what I came up with!
Our playroom features a few different areas, in one big space. There’s the bookshelves that hold most of our school supplies, learning materials, books, and craft storage. Then there’s our Trofast shelves that hold whatever toys we have in rotation. We ALWAYS keep open ended toys like wooden blocks, wooden roads, Magnatiles, and cars in here and then we switch out other toys each month.

Above that, we have whatever books we want on display that month- so usually any holiday or seasonal books or books that we will need for that month’s unit study.
Over in the corner, we have our school area. We found this lovely table on the side of the road, on my neighbor’s curb on bulk pick-up day. It’s the perfect table for this space and you cannot beat FREE! On that wall behind the table, we have lots of things hanging up that set the mood for learning or act as a functional part of our schooling. I remember when I started decorating this room, I thought- man, this wall is HUGE. How am I going to fill it and make it cute and functional? I am so happy with how it turned out!

+ a clock so the kids can use it for telling time
+ sight words chalkboard which we use daily and their custom name puzzles.
+ storage box full of crayons, expo markers, and calendar magnets.
+ vintage school posters- I LOVE these. I’ve wanted them for years and love that they add some fun color to the room.
+ a white board for writing the date, weather, season, and for lessons.
+ our nature shelf- full of rocks, crystals, and other treasures.
+ a letterboard that says “Play is the work of the child”- one of my favorite school quotes ever, by Maria Montessori.
Then right next to this, we have Ezra’s (my toddler) shelf! This has all his toys that are currently in rotation. I rotate the toys every month and now that he’s getting older I may start doing themed shelves for him.

Then we have our lounge area with a couch, nugget, a tv, and a coffee table. Our mini trampoline is also over there- which isn’t really for lounging lol but hey, it’s the only place that it would fit.

Over on a small wall, we have the boys’ play kitchen, along with a cart for their play food, a high chair for their dolls, and a dollhouse for their calico critters.

And of course, in the middle of the room, we have a Pikler triangle, arch, slide, and wobble board for all the movement and wiggling that kids need.

And that’s our playroom! I absolutely LOVE how it came together. When we aren’t outside, we spend most of the day in this room learning, playing, and reading together! I still want to add a few finishing touches like some Alphabet charts and a place to hang their artwork. But I think it’s pretty complete if you ask me!
